Everyone has some junk around the house. You may have been surprised how much “stuff” you’d owned
when you packed to move to a new house. Regardless of the amount of stuff you own, we all can feel good from cleaning and decluttering our homes, and of course the organized rooms look so much better than the messy, cluttered ones. Cluttered room also makes you feel overwhelmed and depressed. The state of your house reflects the state of your mind! Probably one of the hardest part of declutter is to get started. But after all your home is going to look refreshing, and it’s so satisfying as well. Let’s take care of your home to take care of yourself!
*What is clutter?
Clutter is anything you keep around your house that doesn’t add value to your life. Decluttering is all about making your home for only the things that matter to you. The process of decluttering can relieve stress by providing a sense of control and accomplishment. For others, getting rid of the junk frees up a little extra space in the house that wasn’t there before. Sound nice?
‘One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Treasure’
*”Declutter” doesn’t mean to throw away! If you decide to remove items from your home, give it to your friend/family, donate, resell, swap, or upcycle to something else.
Method1: One Thing Every Day
This is one of the easiest and doable decluttering method for many people. Just challenge yourself to find one thing to declutter one day, everyday for 30 days. If you’re anxious about getting rid of things, or you feel like you attach to all the items at home, look for a small item. It could be something as small as a pen, toothbrush, or t-shirt that you haven’t use for long time. It’s a baby step, but will make a difference over time.
Method2: The Minimalism Game
This stricter version of the method 1 is for anyone who wants to challenge your friend/family and yourself one step further to clear up space. It is originated from “the minimalists”, one of the most well-known duo, Joshua and Ryan, in the “minimalism” genre. The have helped “over 20 million people live meaningful lives with less through their website, books, podcast, and documentary.”
In this method you’ll need 30 days to get rid of the items at your home. On the first day you get rid of one item. On the second day you get rid of two items. In the process, you may find items that you should have gotten rid of long time ago like empty makeup products, piece of clothes that’ve been put in the back of the closet for years, etc. during the time you increase the number of items to get rid of one by one each day, and on the 30th day, the total items you’ll have gotten rid of will be 465! They suggest you to play the game with more than two people to make the process more fun and competitive, so find a friend or family and have fun!
Method3: Packing Party
If you’re moving to a new place(Bodaiju?), this method is even better! Pack everything in boxes, and if you need a certain item, take that item out of the box each time and use them. For example, if you want to brush your teeth, unpack the toothbrush, tooth paste, and a cup. After one month, get rid of the things that remain in the box. Yes it sounds kind of extreme, but there’re many people have tried and shared their fun experiences on their blogs/vlogs. If you have a plan to move or you’re a hardcore, this could be the one for you.
Method 4: One In One Out
This method could be effective once you finish clearing your home and will prevent from buying and hoarding a lot of stuff never again. If you buy a new pair of shoes, you get rid of an old pair of shoes. If you buy anything, you get rid of (resell) one item in the same category that you currently have. This also helps you to think more consciously before you buy, because in this method when you have one thing in your life, one needs to leave. Declutter is so much more than just cleaning, but is about making decisions intentionally.
Method5: KonMari Method
This is originated by a Japanese organizing consultant Marie Kondo, and her bestseller “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up” is about simplifying and organizing the home using her method. Her method is very detailed, and her clothes folding technique that makes more space to store is easy to adopt.
What’s unique about the method is that you choose what to keep, instead of what to get rid of. First collect every single item in a particular category (ie. clothes, books, etc) in one place. Then pick up one by one and examine “Does this bring me joy?”
